This reference point is what we now know as the zodiac, a term that comes from the Latin zodiacus, meaning “circle of little animals.” This celestial backdrop, as mapped by the 12 constellations or signs of the zodiac, is our unmoving reference point to observe that which does move, such as the planets. A system was created as a reference point to map the movement of celestial bodies upon the ecliptic, or the Sun’s apparent path. That perspective allowed us to relate our human experience to the cosmos in terms of what we see, what we feel, what we experience, and what we receive.įrom this vantage, astrology was born.
